Transform your barbecue into a delicatessen for a smoked meat-inspired burger. Authentic and unfussy, it combines coleslaw, yellow mustard, sliced dill pickles and a beef patty seasoned with steak spices. This retro nod to a dish that Montreal is famous for is a success every time. This recipe is Nut, Egg, Lactose and Dairy free!

🥗 Pickled Cabbage
Ingredients
- 3 cups (255 g) green cabbage, thinly sliced (preferably with a mandoline)
- ¼ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp dill, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) white wine vinegar
Instructions
- In a large bowl, massage the cabbage and salt by hand for about 2 minutes to release moisture
- Add the dill and vinegar. Mix well.
- Let marinate while preparing the patties.
🍖 Patties
Ingredients
- 1½ lb (675 g) medium-lean ground beef
- 4 tsp steak spice
- Oil, for brushing
Instructions
- Preheat the grill to high. Oil the grill grate.
- In a bowl, combine the beef and steak spice.
- Shape the mixture into 4 patties. Place on a plate and lightly brush with oil.
🍞 Assembling the Burgers
Ingredients
- 4 sesame hamburger buns
- Prepared yellow mustard (to taste)
- 4 dill pickles, sliced
Instructions
- Grill the patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or until cooked to your liking. Grill the buns alongside the patties.
- Spread mustard on the inside of the buns.
- Top each bun bottom with sliced pickles, a burger patty, and some pickled cabbage.
- Close with the top bun and serve immediately.
